Our chosen method of raising our precious puppies and giving them the best start at being outstanding members of society is with Jane Killion's Puppy Culture. If you would like to continue the method at home, it is worth every penny!

Patricia McConnell is a great source for all of your dog training and playing needs. We recommend every family new to puppies or who may desire a refresher purchase her book The Puppy Primer. You can often find it used on amazon or sometimes through your local library (especially if they use the MeLCat service)

Your puppy will come already started with crate training and will be used to sleeping in there every night. You will want to continue this practice along with allowing him several naps throughout the day and crating him (or having them on a leash hooked to your waist, known as umbilical) when you cannot watch him like a hawk.

You will want to schedule your vet in advance of picking up your puppy. Your puppy should be seen no later than 3 days after pick-up so you can be assured that you have a healthy puppy. They WILL NOT
need any vaccines or de-worming, just a general health check.
We feed our puppies Purina Pro Plan Focus Puppy Lamb and Rice formula. We ask that you do not change foods until your puppy has been in your home for AT LEAST 2 weeks, but 4 weeks is ideal. This way you will know that any stomach upset that may occur should not be related to any diet changes. We use Natural Balance Beef Formula Dog food rolls for training treats, a small 3 lb log cut into small pieces will last quite a while and will save you money!
You do not want to overfeed a growing puppy and should offer 3-4 small meals a day for the first few
months. Free feeding is more appropriate for an older puppy depending on if they like to graze or
if they devour anything you put in front of them. Follow the feeding guides on the back of the
feed bag for the daily total intake and use your puppies body condition to determine if you
should increase or decrease the food. Meal feeding (scheduled morning and evening feeding) is the best practice way to keep your dog interested in eating their food.

Dont forget your basics such as leash, and bowls. Metal or ceramic bowls are best as they can be more easily disinfected. Scratches in plastic can harbor bad bacteria that can be bad for your pups health. Water and food dishes should be washed daily when possible, and at minimum several times a week.
If you get a bed make sure it is a simple washable bed at first. All of my own dogs prefer the plastic liner to a bed and just shove the bed out of the way because doodles run hot! As they get older they will thank you for buying them a cooling pet bed :)
